Last week we shed some light<\/a> on the twisting tale of US men\u2019s professional soccer. That history \u2014 full of confusion and conflict and general disagreement \u2014  goes back 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, we\u2019re diving into the much shorter, slightly less convoluted history of women\u2019s professional soccer in the United States. Where the chaos in the men\u2019s game stems from greed, that\u2019s not the case here. Until recently, there hasn\u2019t been enough money in the market \u2014 most attempts to create a thriving professional women\u2019s league ended up stifled by financial constraints and a perceived lack of public interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, that\u2019s no longer the case. Inspired by the national team\u2019s incredible success, women\u2019s soccer is on a meteoric rise. In 2020, NWSL viewership average 400,000 per game, comparable to NHL viewership. And high-profile corporate sponsorships rolled in. Female soccer participation is at an all-time high, from youth soccer to the collegiate level. And the U.S Women\u2019s national team continues to dominate and will enter the 2023 World Cup as reigning champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
